Writing

English is a vital way of communicating in school and beyond.

In studying writing pupils are enabled to express themselves creatively and imaginatively to communicate with others effectively.

During Early Years and Key Stage 1 the teaching of phonics complements and supports writing building accuracy and speed.

Through Key Stage 2 there is a progressive emphasis on the skills of planning, drafting and revising.  The range of reading and writing increases and with it the need to understand a wider variety of genres underpinned by grammatical knowledge.

Writing is closely related to reading.  The context of pupils reading gives structure, theme and purpose for much of their writing while the focused teaching of grammar contributes to the organisation and accuracy of their writing.

With this in mind we remind parents of the importance of reading with your child and the positive impact this will have on their writing.

The more reading children do the better writers they become.
